Raupo provides an important refuge habitat for bittern fledglings and it is important to keep a good water level and food source around the raupo so that the bittern fledglings do not need to wander into more open areas where they are more vulnerable. From now to late January is a key time when bittern fledglings are vulnerable. Has anyone else heard any booming sounds coming from their local marsh? Our bird project learder Doug Morin tells us more: "This is a male American Bittern, performing it’s vocalization – sometimes called “booming.” Bitterns are a highly camouflaged and secretive species that inhabit dense shallow marshes. The strong, low-pitched “booming” call is important because it carries a long distance, allowing competing males and interested females to know where the displaying bird is, despite their habi

I had a Pāteke disturb monitoring this morning...just popped out of the wetland and waddled on through the ngāhere! Not concerned at all by the human sitting up in the tree a metre or so above it! Pāteke or Brown Teal are 'Nationally increasing' but remain 'Conservation Dependent', meaning the population needs ongoing support to recover and is still vulnerable to threats like predation and habitat loss. Pāteke need wetlands too...when we restore Habitat for Hūrepo we help other wetland dependent

Can you hear the boom? 🔊 That’s the mating call of the mysterious matuku/bittern, a large wetland bird more often heard than seen. Our staff, along with Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Fish & Game New Zealand and over 80 volunteers, put on our detective hats to record population estimates of the endangered bittern. This is an essential count to help us evaluate trends, prioritise habitat restoration and determine how to adapt to management. Learn more about the matuku/bittern here: https://bit.

American Bittern Botaurus lentiginosus In this video we see the sharp-eyed bittern stealthily stalking along the water’s edge and sneaking around a clump of tall grass in search of prey. We are rewarded by finally seeing it capture a rather large crayfish, Cambarus ssp., which it downs in a couple of gulps. Male bitterns are known for their loud booming calls that reverberate around the marshes of their northern breeding and nesting grounds in the spring, where they are more likely to be heard t
