Abdullah was the son of King Abdulaziz and Fahda bint Asi Al Shuraim. His mother was a member of the Al Rashid dynasty, historical rivals of the Al Saud dynasty.

Abdullah was the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia from 1995 to 2015 and ruled formally as king after the death of his half-brother King Fahd in 2005.
